It is thus needed to look in for used curriculum and discount homeschool supplies which can help parents to control their homeschooling budget.

Some useful tips:

•    Before buying textbooks, make sure what curriculum you want to teach your each child. Consider every subject that you will teach.

•    Also, make a list of items you need for each subject and child. These items may include lesson plans, workbooks, answer keys, flash cards and extra items.

•    It is always better to note down the name of publisher, title, edition and level of each item that you want to purchase.

•    There are many places to find used homeschooling materials online. Some homeschool curriculum providers have message boards where you can list or buy used homeschool books. •    Check out with local homeschool groups for used textbooks. You can place your list in the newsletter or email group. Look in for listings of items that are on sale or for free. It might have not worked for their homes, but might work for you. So just have a look before someone else peeps in!

•    You can also have a look at local garage sales, thrift stores, library sales and used bookstores. Many of them are at half price that can suit your budget as well as your requirement of that particular curriculum.

•    Be aware of the condition of the used homeschool curriculum items you’re buying. If the workbooks are worked through, you might need a replacement of the same. It is better to ask the seller about any missing or damaged pages in the books or pages that contain writing. If only a few pages have been worked through, you can erase the writing easily.

•    There are places or districts that sell surplus and cheap textbooks annually. Check in for such books. Keep in mind the outdated books that have no purpose of useful teaching. Screen carefully through the pages of the books.

•    Evaluate the sellers payment methods before shelling out money for the purchase of textbooks. Try to understand the total cost of the products and how they can be reached to you. Ask for the time of arrival of books and the sellers return policy.

•    Your feedback is essential to help other buyers decide whether to make the purchase or not. Thus, your feedback about the seller is essential for other buyers to make their decision.

I’m looking for a good 10th grade homeschool curriculum. Please tell me why it is good. I had purchased one but did not care for it to much. The literature/English class basically ignored classic literature in favor of religious texts. I would prefer one that was not bible based and had nothing to do with any religion. I sincerely appreciate everyones help.

I am a successful work at home mom of 4 kids. I have been checking into different homeschool curriculums but was looking for some testimonials of ones that have worked for other parents.

More and more children are being homeschooled these days. Because of this, there is an abundance of resources for homeschooling. There are several types of homeschooling, including Classical, Montessori and Eclectic. You may also have heard of Abeka homeschool. Actually, Abeka is not a type of homeschooling but a curriculum package that parents of homeschooled children can use.

The Abeka homeschool curriculum is one of the most popular Christian homeschooling curriculums. It is a complete learning system that includes a teacher’s guide, suggested lesson plans, templates for testing, and textbooks. The Abeka curriculum is known to be challenging; it is typically one grade level ahead of regular public schools. Thus, a first grade Abeka curriculum is equivalent to second grade public school curriculum.

The Abeka homeschool curriculum covers homeschooling from kindergarten to 12th grade. It is an accredited, faith-based home schooling program used by many Christian schools. Like any curriculum, it has its pros and cons that you must consider before you decide to use it in a homeschooling program for your kids.

Pros

The curriculum includes lesson plans and schedules similar to that used in public schools. New homeschooling families will find it extremely helpful. The materials are advanced and may be used for gifted students.

You can purchase Abeka learning materials individually, or as part of grade-level kits. This way, home schooling families can buy only the specific materials that they want. In addition, Abeka curriculum materials have a high resale value. Many homeschooling parents prefer to buy used Abeka curriculum to save money.

Cons

The homeschooling packages of Abeka are quite expensive and much more costly than public schooling. Abeka also changes their textbooks and curriculum materials frequently, making it difficult to find the right workbooks if you use the same textbooks for your younger children.

Abeka homeschool relies heavily on textbooks and workbooks. It is more time-consuming than other curriculums for homeschooling. Thus, it may not be the ideal curriculum for parents who prefer a more relaxed approach. Also, average students may find the accelerated curriculum too challenging, leading to higher burnout rate.

Abeka homeschooling offers an accredited program for kindergarten up to grade 12 where report cards and transcripts are maintained by Abeka. The program is offered with a video option or traditional parent-directed option. It is a faith-based, accelerated curriculum and it is up to you to decide if Abeka homeschool is suitable for your child.

There are many educational institutions that offer homeschool curriculums that can be tailored however you wish, depending on what you wish to teach your children. Just like in a formal school, you will be sent text books, materials, the tools to test your childs’ progress, as well as anything else you think you may need.

To find a homeschool resource, search online or ask your local school if they know of any homeschool curriculum companies that you may benefit from.

Home schooling your children can be difficult and it’s not for the faint of heart. However, when done correctly, your children can potentially receive a better education than they ever would have in a formal school. The method for your record keeping can be as simple as a piece of paper and and as complex as a computer pro gramme- it is completely up to you to decide which method will be more effective. If you are participating in a support group, you most likely have set forms and requirements. However, staying on top of daily assignments and reports will make the process so much more efficient and easily achievable in the homeschooling environment.

The most popular record keeping methods used by various home schools are listed below.

Daily planner:

Lay out the plans and the assignments for the week in a teacher’s planning notebook. Check each item as it is covered, and make additional notes if issues arise which might be improved on in the next semester. Maintain a separate area where any additional things can be recorded. This may include educational trips, visits and videos, homeschooling online materials etc. Any extra topics that were covered should also be recorded in this area. Make sure you make a summary at least once every quarter.

Journal:

This can be maintained by either the teacher or the student. This basically aims to keep a log of what was learned and what was done in the homeschooling sessions. No only is keeping a journal of your homeschooling a fantastic way to reminisce in the future, it is also a means to monitor the effectiveness of your teaching and your child’s interpretations of the homeschooling process.

Portfolios:

This consists of a collection of diverse materials that display what the child has achieved and done during the course of his/her homeschooling study. Portfolio assessment is a very effective way to chart the child’s progress. It gives structure to the otherwise loose and flexible form of schooling called homeschooling. A drawing portfolio will consist of some paintings or sketches that are considered the best in that quarter. A language portfolio may consist of essays, stories, reading-logs, spelling samples or letters. Progress in subjects such as mathematics, fine arts, history, science and social studies can all be recorded in this manner. The biggest advantage is that portfolio assessment places control in the hands of the home schooled child. Having a tangible record of what they have achieved in their homeschooling will only serve to motivate them to achieve more and more.

There is now an abundance of homeschooling organizers and planners available online- do use due diligence when considering homeschooling products- preferable use a recommendation where you can see how effective the product is going to be. Whichever method of record keeping you decide on for your homeschooling, it is an essential part of the homeschooling process and will be beneficial to initiate from the start. You never know, your child’s future may depend on this system of record-keeping.
