The decision to home school your child can be a very difficult decision to make. With the high rate of two-income families today, many parents wonder if they can make the financial and time sacrifice, even it is the right thing to do. Many more wonder if their children can get the same level of quality education if they choose homeschooling. However, despite these concerns, the rate at which parents are choosing to home school their kids continue to rise.
There are a huge number of reasons why parents choose to home school their kids. For many parent, it is because they want to be able to add religious content to their children’s learning experience. For others, they see the decline in the public education system today and want to choose something that is better for their kids.
According to a recent an August 2006 ABC 20/20 special, many kids today are not being taught even the needed fundamentals for them to graduate. For example, one student was interviewed who was in high school but was only able to read properly at a fourth grade level. Another student interviewed mentioned that cheating was actually encouraged by his teacher – goodness!.
Although the public education system is not as good as it should be and expected today, the decision to homeschooling as an alternative is one that should not be taken too lightly. When choosing to home school your kids, you must first consider these 7 things:
1. Time commitment
Homeschooling has a tendency to take up a lot of time of the parent. The process involves more than just sitting down with books for a couple of hours. There are experiments and projects that have to be done, lessons to prepare, papers to grade, field trips, park days, music lessons, and the list just keeps on going and going. Fortunately, you can go online and search for some homeschool sample schedules that will help to give you an idea of a typical day.
2. Personal sacrifice
The homeschooling parent sacrifice much and has very little personal time or time alone and away from their children. If a lot of care is not taken to set aside time for yourself, it is easy for the parent to feel overwhelmed and stress. It is not unusual for the parent and child to be together 24 hours a day, which can eventually lead to frustration on both sides.
3. Financial problems can arise
Though homeschooling can be accomplished with very little cost to you; however, it usually requires that the teaching parent not work, either out of the home or not. Some sacrifices will need to be made if the family is used to depend on two incomes. Of course, if you are a single parent, this could be an even bigger problem.
4. Time for socialization
More attention will need to be given to getting your children to spend time together with his/her peers. The best part of homeschooling is being able to have more control of the potential social contacts your child makes. However, the downside is that you must personally prepare your child yourself on how to socialize with other kids. Homeschooling can have a tendency to make your child feel quite isolated.
5. Household organization is harder
Housework, laundry and other chores will still have to be done, but it probably will get done first thing in the morning. If you are a neat freak, you might be in for a big big surprise. Not only does housework need to be let go at times, but also homeschooling does creates messes and clutter on its own. You will have to get really organized so that you can keep your home together.
6. Both parents must agree to it
It is important that both parents agree to the idea of homeschooling. It is very difficult for this to work if one of the parents is against it right from the start. If your spouse is against it at this time, try doing more research and talking to more people so that you can be absolutely certain it is something that both of you can agree upon and pursue. Otherwise, the chances for success are very much smaller.
7. Your child has to be willing
A willing student is crucial to the success of homeschooling. Ultimately, the decision is the parents to make, but if your child is dead set against it, you might have a very difficult time in teaching and convincing them. The fact of the matter is that an unwilling child can sabotage his/her own education progress efforts.
There is a lot more to homeschooling than is often seen at first sight. As a parent, you must know that your child’s education is the most important factor in their future. You need to be thoroughly prepared for all of the time and commitment that is going to be involved. If you are thinking of choosing homeschooling for your children, it will be very important to network with other like-minded parents in your local area. Not only will this help with the program planning process, but will also provide a place to share ideas and concerns with others who are probably experiencing the same thing.

Any educator will stand behind the fact that children should read and write as much as they can in their elementary years. The way to drill an idea or study into a child’s head is by approaching it from many angles and through repetition, becoming part of a child’s long-term memory. There are numerous writing activities that teachers and home-school environments exercise on a daily basis. Here are a few of the basics, and what they can do for your child:

Printable Homeschool Worksheets – Things to Know

If you home school your children, you will quickly realize how important printable homeschool worksheets can be. If you are trying to develop a curriculum for your home-schooled child, you may be able to save a lot of time and money by using free online home school worksheets. However, while they can be a helpful tool and seem like an attractive alternative to a homeschool, they do have a number of limitations.
There are numerous online resources that offer online worksheets that you can download and use for your children’s homeschooling for free. They cover practically all subjects under the sun. Different homeschool worksheets are available that are suitable for all types of curriculums, and they can help enhance what you are teaching.
Aside from helping you assess your child’s comprehension of a subject matter, printable home school worksheets also provide something for your child to do while you work on other things. This means that you can be free to run your home while teaching your child at the same time, because the worksheet simplifies the homeschooling job for you.
Home schooling can be expensive and difficult to implement, especially on a tight budget. If money is tight, homeschool worksheets that you can get for free can take the place of a textbook. The worksheet will be able to teach pretty much the same things that a textbook will, and yet you won’t have to spend hundreds of dollars on books. Although some worksheet resources charge a small fee, you will be able to access thousands of printable worksheets that you can use for homeschooling.
Different worksheets are available for different areas of study at home. If you know what your child will be learning for the year, you can already find worksheets for homeschooling on that particular topic.
In choosing a worksheet, it is important to review the source and check the material. Ensure that the material and answers are accurate. Evaluate the worksheet by completing it yourself. The worksheet should provide information clearly and accurately. Make sure it is exactly what you need to homeschool your child.
Homeschool worksheets have pros and cons that depend on the type of material the worksheet deals with. One advantage is that worksheets are very handy if you want to give your child something to do. Some types of worksheets are very easy to grade and can be completed without much input from you. Worksheets can also give you a good idea of how much your child was able to understand of the subject matter.
While worksheets for homeschool can assist in home schooling, they cannot take the place of a proper homeschool curriculum. One disadvantage they have is that they often focus on one subject area only, without integrating the whole curriculum. They can also be simplistic and give the impression that the student understands more than he actually does.
Free homeschool worksheets that you can print are available online. Some of them may be excellent, but you will have to make sure that they are accurate and suitable for your curriculum or child.

Homeschooling Laws – What You Should Know

]]>
Your legal situation as a homeschooler depends largely on what state you live in and how state and local officials enforce the laws concerning compulsory attendance, private education, and homeschooling. Whether they require registration, a notice of intent, regular evaluation, or advance approval, the statutes take in your state can be less important than how they are enforced.
To keep your homeschooling legal worries to the minimal level they deserve, here are some things which you should bear in mind:
Know what your state’s law says. Read the applicable statutes for yourself, talk to other homeschoolers, and join a state homeschooling organization that monitors the regulations affecting homeschoolers.
Learn what potential problems for homeschoolers exist in your state. Learn how other homeschoolers have dealt with them successfully, and plan how you’d respond if faced with them yourself. Don’t wait until after the fact to learn what your options could have been.
Do not automatically assume that any explanation of home-schooling legal issues you hear or read is correct. Whether the opinion is that of a school official, a lawyer for a home-school legal defense organization, a legislator, or another homeschooler, you need to check it out for yourself. Laws concerning homeschooling are usually complex; clear and definitive statements on legal issues usually leave out something important.
Do not let worry about legal issues distract you from the everyday business of homeschooling. When homeschoolers object to rules that require them to document their children’s learning or to have their kids tested on a regular basis, it’s because such requirements often interfere with that learning. If you are changing your whole approach to homeschooling because of your state’s legal requirements, you are probably worrying way too much about the law.
Do not be shy about your homeschooling. You don’t have to announce it to everyone you meet, but visible home-schoolers help make homeschooling familiar and acceptable to the general public. With enough of us around, the, public may eventually understand that homeschooling can be fun and exciting, as well as effective, and we’ll find we have active support even from families who would never homeschool themselves.

Homeschooling, for some parents might seem to be a costly affair. But reality is not! You need not have to worry about the cost involved. Families often make buying decisions that don’t work for them may be because they buy something that was really not needed to be bought. Shopping for homeschool curriculum can be a nightmare for such parents.
It is thus needed to look in for used curriculum and discount homeschool supplies which can help parents to control their homeschooling budget.
Some useful tips:
• Before buying textbooks, make sure what curriculum you want to teach your each child. Consider every subject that you will teach.
• Also, make a list of items you need for each subject and child. These items may include lesson plans, workbooks, answer keys, flash cards and extra items.
• It is always better to note down the name of publisher, title, edition and level of each item that you want to purchase.
• There are many places to find used homeschooling materials online. Some homeschool curriculum providers have message boards where you can list or buy used homeschool books. You can check in websites and online message boards. There are many online auction sites that provide lists of used textbooks.
• Check out with local homeschool groups for used textbooks. You can place your list in the newsletter or email group. Look in for listings of items that are on sale or for free. It might have not worked for their homes, but might work for you. So just have a look before someone else peeps in!
• You can also have a look at local garage sales, thrift stores, library sales and used bookstores. Many of them are at half price that can suit your budget as well as your requirement of that particular curriculum.
• Be aware of the condition of the used homeschool curriculum items you’re buying. If the workbooks are worked through, you might need a replacement of the same. It is better to ask the seller about any missing or damaged pages in the books or pages that contain writing. If only a few pages have been worked through, you can erase the writing easily.
• There are places or districts that sell surplus and cheap textbooks annually. Check in for such books. Keep in mind the outdated books that have no purpose of useful teaching. Screen carefully through the pages of the books.
• Evaluate the sellers payment methods before shelling out money for the purchase of textbooks. Try to understand the total cost of the products and how they can be reached to you. Ask for the time of arrival of books and the sellers return policy.
• Your feedback is essential to help other buyers decide whether to make the purchase or not. Thus, your feedback about the seller is essential for other buyers to make their decision.
